C Duncan case study

It might be worth your while having a look at reasonably successful indie artist C Duncan. He produced his album in his Glaswegian flat for £50 apparently, but has had lots of airplay on Radio6 Music, playing festivals etc.

And also the independent label he is on, Fatcat Records, which started as an underground dance record store in 1989....

EVALUATION

  1. In the evaluation the following seven questions must be addressed:
    1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
    2.How does your media product represent particular social groups?
    3.What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
    4.Who would be the audience for your media product?
    5.How did you attract/address your audience?
    6.What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  2. 7.Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

    Your evaluation needs to use multimedia, such as YouTube, Emaze, Prezi, Wix, Slideshare etc. I highly recommend making a video for each question- you could use a variety of those software to present your ideas and then use screen record on QuickTime and talk over the video. This makes 20% of your mark.

    You should show a close to finished version to your desired audience, get feedback and make any changes necessary.

  3. Your evaluation, blog and films must be finished for Tuesday 9 May and this date is non-negotiable. Your timekeeping and punctuality constitute part of your marks. If you need any help just ask, sooner rather than later.

Music areas

Candidates should be prepared to understand and discuss the processes of production, distribution, marketing and exchange as they relate to contemporary media institutions, as well as, the nature of audience consumption and the relationship between audiences and institutions. In addition candidates should be familiar with:
 • the issues raised by media ownership in contemporary media practice;
• the importance of cross media convergence and synergy, in production, distribution and marketing;
• the technologies that have been introduced in recent years at the levels of production, marketing and exchange;
• the significance of proliferation in hardware and content for institutions and audiences;
• the importance of technological convergence for institutions and audiences;
• the issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences (specifically, British) by international and global institutions;
• the ways in which the candidates’ own experiences of media consumption illustrate wider patterns and trends of audience behaviour.

This unit should be approached through contemporary examples in the form of case studies based upon one of the specified media areas. Examples may include the following:

Music
A study of a particular record label within the contemporary music industry that targets a British audience, including its patterns of production, distribution marketing and consumption by audiences. This should be accompanied by the study of strategies used by the record labels to counter the practice of file sharing and their impact on music production, marketing and consumption.
